New Heirloom Gardens is a locally-grown cut flower garden born in the magical township, Ypsilanti, Michigan by me, Sara Afshar. While taking a break from being an immigration lawyer while I was in a poetry MFA program, I met and worked for a very cool group of flower farmers.

Even though I had been long inspired by farm-to-table chefs like Dan Barber, I realized I never once thought about where we get our flowers, how that impacts the environment, and what international shipping does to the quality of the bloom.

Settled back in Massachusetts, I am so excited New Heirloom Gardens can live up to its name. I am back with my family of green thumbs who make this little project even better. 2025 is my first season back in Massachusetts, and I can’t wait to bring you the enchantment of flowers grown down the road by someone who grew up playing in the same field <3
